The CCHA era begins for Miami hockey with the Red and White defeating Western Michigan 2-0 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Vern Sketchley and Steve Morris each tallied goals while Dan Kodatsky earned the shutout in goal. Miami went on to collect nine league wins in its inaugural season of CCHA play.

In front of a Goggin Arena crowd of 3,248, Miami falls 3-2 to defending National Champion Lake Superior State. The Red and White rebounds the following night, knocking off the Lakers 4-3 in front of 3,144, the third largest crowd in Goggin history. It was the most well-attended hockey weekend in Miami history.

The age of Miami varsity ice hockey begins at Goggin Ice Arena with the Red and White thrashing the arch-rival Cincinnati Bearcats 15-2. Paul Kinney led Miami with four goals while Dave McClintock also tallied a hat trick.

Miami tallies five goals in the third period as it soundly defeats number two Michigan, 8-3. This is the largest margin of victory in school history against U of M. Derek Edwardson recorded his second career hat-trick in the contest.

With a 12-1 victory and a 13 save performance against Air Force at the Lefty McFadden Invitational, Miami goaltender David Burleigh moved past Richard Shulmistra for the all-time record at Miami with 41 wins.
