Louis lifts Miami over BG
OXFORD, Ohio – Thanks to Anthony Louis, there was no free hockey at Cady Arena on Saturday.
The junior forward ripped a one-timer into the bottom corner of the net with two seconds left in regulation to lift Miami to a 2-1 win over Bowling Green.

Senior Jay Williams stopped 28 shots to earn the win, which was just the second for the RedHawks in 11 games.
Kevin Dufour opened the scoring for the Falcons, as his shot from the top of the faceoff circle snuck under Williams’ arm 5:55 into the first period.
Off a steal by Louis, Miami senior Alex Gacek tied it with 4:15 left in the middle stanza, stuffing a loose puck home from the side of the net.
It remained 1-1 until the closing seconds of the third period, when Gacek fed Louis from the side of the net back to Louis, who ripped it just inside the post on the glove side for the decisive score.
That meant no overtime for MU, which had seen five of its first 20 games go to an extra session.
Louis and Gacek both finished with a goal and an assist.
Louis has now recorded five points in his last five games, and Gacek scored his second goal in four contests.
Williams picked up his second victory, improving to 2-2-1 and 3-0 in his career vs. Bowling Green.
The RedHawks resume league play next weekend, as they travel to Nebraska-Omaha. They play at 8:37 p.m. on Friday and 8:07 p.m. on Saturday.
Miami hosts Bowling Green
WHO: Bowling Green Falcons (13-6-5) at Miami RedHawks (6-11-3).
WHERE: Cady Arena, Oxford, Ohio.
WHEN: Saturday–7:05 p.m.
TV: None.
BOWLING GREEN RADIO: WBGU-FM (88.1).
MIAMI RADIO: WMOH-AM (1450), Hamilton, Ohio; WKBV-AM (1490), Richmond, Ind.
NOTES: Like Miami, Bowling Green has done a better job of shutting down opponents than it has scoring goals. The Falcons have scored just 58 goals in 24 games, but the Falcons have allowed just 44 markers.
The offensively-strapped BGSU team is led by Matt Pohlkamp, who has five goals and a team-best 11 assists for 16 points.
Sniper Mark Cooper has scored nine times and has set up four more markers, and Kevin Dufour and Tyler Spezia have lit the lamp five times each to pace the Falcons.
But goalie Chris Nell has been the key to BGSU’s success. He is 9-3-5 with a 1.37 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage.
The Falcons have lost two of their last three games and three of five, splitting at Lake Superior State last weekend.
It should be Jay Williams in net for Miami.
Miami opens 2016 with pair vs. RPI
WHO: RPI Engineers (10-6-3) at Miami RedHawks (5-9-2).
WHERE: Cady Arena, Oxford, Ohio.
WHEN: Saturday–7:05 p.m. Sunday–5:05 p.m.
RPI RADIO: WRPI (FM) 93.1, Troy, N.Y.
MIAMI RADIO: WKBV-AM (1490), Richmond, Ind.; WMOH-AM (1450), Hamilton, Ohio.
NOTES: After a 27-day layoff, Miami opens the second half of its season today as it hopes to snap a 56-day winless streak.
The RedHawks are burdened with a six-game winless streak entering 2016, and they will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an unusual Saturday-Sunday weekend series at Cady Arena.
RPI is also coming off an extended layoff of three weeks after sweeping Arizona State to improve to 10-6-3.
Like Miami, the Engineers have had one primary scorer and a secondary sniper, and the rest of the team has struggled to find the net. Riley Bourbonnais has 10 goals and seven assists for a team-best 17 points.
Jake Wood is second in goals (6) and points (11), and Mark Miller and Milos Bubela have netted four goals each.
After taking over in net, senior and Buffalo Sabres draftee Jason Kasdorf is 4-4-1, 2.04 with a .939 save percentage, and barring a blow up should be between the pipes both nights this weekend.
Miami won both games in 2014-15 in a series played at RPI.
The RedHawks are in seventh place in the NCHC, and while these games won’t help Miami get back into its league race, they can do wonders for the team’s PairWise status.
After a pair of losses at then second-last ranked Colorado College, the RedHawks’ ranking plummeted and is currently 27th.
Wins in these games certainly won’t correct Miami’s dismal start in NCHC play but they can certainly boost the RedHawks’ status both internally and in the PairWise.
The RedHawks will be without sophomore defenseman Louie Belpedio, who is playing in the World Juniors in Finland. That leaves Miami with just seven defensemen on its roster, including F/D Michael Mooney.
Welcome to The Skate – Frozen Four Predictions
The road to the Frozen Four – “The Skate” rather than The Dance – starts in about 45 minutes. 4 Regions, 4 teams each. 5 Conference Champions, 11 at-large berths. 1 Championship.
Miami begins in the Midwest Regional in Toledo, OH tomorrow, as we’ve already previewed. And previewed again… But what about those other teams in the Midwest? And who else is in this thing anyways? Let’s break it down and give you our 2013 Frozen Four predictions in the process.
Miami vs. Minnesota State – Another take
The road to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh
begins this weekend for 16 NCAA teams.
This Saturday, Miami’s NCAA tournament run takes a trip through Toledo, Ohio, as the RedHawks take on the Minnesota State Mavericks. There are some interesting storylines that my co-blogger redhawk95 laid out for you: Miami can’t win the big games and a “one and done” is forthcoming. Well fear not, RedHawks. I think Rico Blasi and the youngest Miami team in decades have more going for them this weekend than previously expressed.
Analysis: Miami stands a strong #3 in PairWise
The march to Pittsburgh is nearly upon us.
When we were looking at the PairWise back in December, it didn’t really make sense. Now, however, it’s very meaningful. Let’s take a look at what’s happening keeping travel in mind. First, there are 2 regionals that Miami would love to be at: Toledo and Grand Rapids. Light travel, meaning no big trips out east to play eastern teams that are hosting, even when Miami is a #1 seed (UNH, 2011). And secondly, Miami could end up staying within 302 miles of Oxford (Grand Rapids: 298 mile drive, Pittsburgh, 302 mile drive) from the CCHA tournament through the Frozen Four if things happen to fall correctly. It’s certainly not a lock, and there’s a long way to go, but let’s take a deeper look at the current PairWise.
RedHawks announce commemorative jersey for Hockey City Classic
Tonight, Miami unveiled their uniform for the 2013 Hockey City Classic, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen from the RedHawks. Or maybe it’s a combination of a lot of what you’ve seen in the past from them? Either way, I can’t say they are the prettiest jerseys I’ve ever seen, but they do look pretty darn special.
Here’s Miami’s release on the new jersey design, with Steven Spinell showing off the new unis. Spinell is a Chicago-born and raised kid, who will certainly relish this weekend’s game against Notre Dame in Soldier Field.
RedHawks Entertain White Hot Nanooks
“Red hot” just wouldn’t be fitting for the fighting polar bears from Alaska at the moment. The Nanooks come to town on a 6-game win streak with each of the 6 wins coming at a critical time in the race to the CCHA playoffs. Behind the EZAC’s ECAC’s Quinnipiac (15-0-2) and Hockey East’s UMass-Lowell (10-0-1), they are one of the hottest teams in the country. Looking at those team’s opponents, it’s safe to say that Alaska is truly that hottest team.
Rico gets 300th (and 301st), RedHawks Sweep
Coming off of a weekend sweep in Oxford, the RedHawks look ahead to another (!?!?!) home series against Alaska to start off what looks to be a rugged February schedule. Miami hadn’t been at home for a game in 48 days before Friday night, and after the upcoming weekend will have played 4 home games in 9 days. Follow that up with the Western Michigan Broncos in Kalamazoo and Notre Dame on Friday 2/15 and Sunday in Chicago on 2/17, and Miami’s strength of schedule and RPI should be rising quickly. Here’s what you missed over the last week.
