While you were away

We are back to hockey tomorrow night! After a 1-spot drop to #6 in the polls after losing to Robert Morris, Miami is already in Marquette, MI where they will take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats Friday and Saturday. Before we preview the weekend, here’s what you missed since the Three Rivers Classic in Pittsburgh.

McKay named CCHA, HCA Rookie of the Month

It was quite a return for Freshman goalie Ryan McKay after his injury in the first month of the season. McKay missed all of November, but returned on December 1st and played 4 times in December, allowing just 3 goals. Despite going 2-2-0, his stats were astounding: he allowed just 0.76 GAA and sported a .970 save percentage. In both of his losses in December, the RedHawks failed to support him on the offensive side of the ice, losing both 1-0. McKay shut out Alaska in his return with a 1-0 win in the Great White North, and only allowed 1 goal against Ohio State on December 15. Check out MURedHawks.com’s releases on his CCHA Goalie of the Month award and the HCA National Rookie of the Month award by clicking the links.

Kuraly and Barber win Gold at the 2013 World Junior Championships

The Under-20 tournament, perhaps the most prestigious tournament in hockey, was played in Ufa, Russia. Team USA came in as one of the favorites to medal, not necessarily to win it all, and walked away on top for the first time since 2010 and just the 3rd time ever. It was quite a turnaround for the Americans who finished 7th last year in the same tournament.

Take a gander at Chris Peters’ tournament review of the USA Forwards here (while you’re there, just go ahead and follow his blog). He has some good words for Kuraly and especially Barber, who will likely be playing in Sweden for Team USA in the 2014 WJC. Kuraly started the tournament for the US with a goal just 19 seconds in to their first game. He only added 2 assists the rest of the way. Barber ended with 3 goals and 3 assists. Both helped Alex Galchenyuk become the star on the second scoring line, and he did so, scoring 2 goals and 6 assists – fourth on the team in points.
