>Guerin Signs With Checkers

The Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL have announced the signing of former RedHawk Marty Guerin. Here is an excerpt from the release:
“In 156 collegiate games, Guerin totaled 49 goals and 66 assists for 115 points with 147 penalty minutes. He was a 9th round selection of the Los Angeles Kings during the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft.”
“During his year with the South Carolina Stingrays, Guerin managed 18 goals and 32 assists for 50 points in 68 games. He also added 9 goals and 7 assists for 16 points in 17 playoff games.”

>Miele Represents on INCH’s A-Z List

Sophomore forward Andy Miele has been chosen as Inside College Hockey’s “Player to Watch” for the Miami
RedHawks.
Here’s a brief snippet:
“One of Miele’s best assets is his ability to see and process what’s going on around him on the ice, a skill which elevates his own play and the play of his linemates.”

>Davis Ranked 15th By Hockey’s Future

Hockey’s Future has put together a nice feture on the Chicago Blackhawks’ top twenty prospects, and Miami alum Nathan Davis cracked the list at number fifteen. Here’s their assessment of the Rocky River, Ohio native:
“Davis is similar to Billy Sweatt in many ways. Though he does not possess Sweatt’s speed, he is a sound skater who sees the ice well, thus making him dangerous in transition. Additionally, like Sweatt, Davis can play defense with the best of them. In fact, he was considered by many to be one of the top defensive forwards in college while at Miami. Davis’ quality two-way game makes him an ideal special teams player. Now that he has been signed by Chicago, Davis will likely see time in Rockford next season.”

>Martinez High On Kings List

Frozen Royalty, a wonderful site about the Los Angeles Kings, has a nice article about Alec Martinez. Below, is a small excerpt from the original article:
As with all of their young prospects, the Kings’ coaching staff worked with their young defenseman to refine their games, and Martinez was no exception.
“There’s always little things,” Martinez explained. “You can improve your deception, picking your head up a little earlier, surveying the ice to get better vision. There’s definitely room for improvement.”

>Zatkoff Impressing Kings’ Staff

Ryan Kennedy over at The Hockey News, has put together a list of players from different organizations, that have looked impressive thus far in development camps, rookie camps, etc. Miami alum Jeff Zatkoff received a mention, with the LA Kings.
5. Jeff Zatkoff, G – Miami RedHawks (CCHA): The now former RedHawk turned aside all 25 shots he faced in the Kings’ scrimmage game, including a penalty shot. With Zatkoff, Jonathan Bernier and Jon Quick, the Kings will have their choice of young hot goalies for years to come. Drafted 74th overall by Los Angeles in 2006.
Good to see Zats doing well. He has a great chance at making the big club, but I believe he’ll start the season in Ontario and quickly move up to Manchester. It all depends on who LA wants to keep on the main roster, whether it be Erik Ersberg, or Jonathan Bernier.
>Wolves Re-Ink Sipotz

Rosemont, IL – The Chicago Wolves have re-signed defenseman Brian Sipotz, a member of the 2008 Calder Cup Championship team, for a fifth season.
The 26-year-old blueliner appeared in 21 of 24 Calder Cup playoff games en route to last season’s title, posting four assists and 14 penalty minutes. He also skated in 54 regular season outings, notching a +10 plus/minus rating and five points (G, 4A).
Overall, the South Bend, Ind., native has notched 32 assists, 39 points and 130 penalty minutes in 259 career American Hockey League games with Chicago, spanning four seasons (2004-2008). The 6-foot-7-inch, 248-pound defenseman also racked up six assists and seven points in 47 career postseason matchups with the Wolves, which includes two trips to the Finals (2005,2008).
Prior to joining Chicago, Sipotz played four seasons at Miami University of Ohio (2000-2004), tallying five assists and 139 penalty minutes in 119 matchups.
In accordance with team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
>Hartlieb Re-Signs With Everblades

The Florida Everblades have announced the re-signing of former RedHawk Ernie Hartlieb (Class of ’01). In four seasons with the Everblades, Hartlieb, team captain, has been an integral part of the squad, posting solid numbers last season, his best with Florida. He’s seen time at the AHL level as well, with Worcester, Lowell, and Grand Rapids.
>Musitelli Signs With Bombers

Nino Musitelli is now a member of the Dayton Bombers.This is a great accomplishment for Nino; to play with some great players in the ECHL. In his four years as a RedHawk, Musitelli tallied 21 goals and 37 assists. As a freshman, he only participated in 14 games due to injury, but developed into a solid player as the years progressed, especially during the 2007-2008 season. Nice to see he’ll still be in the Miami Valley.
Best of luck to Nino. I’m sure the Musitelli clan will make many a trip to the Nutter Center.
>Jones, Effinger, Honored With Athlete of the Year Honors
>Former RedHawks Ryan Jones and Charlie Effinger have both been presented with Athlete of the Year Honors. Jones was awarded “Male Athlete of the Year” and Effinger, the “Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.”
Here is the writeup, from MURedhawks.com on Jones:
(Chatham, Ontario) was one of three 2008 Hobey Baker finalists and earned 2008 ACHA West All-America First Team honors. A three-time all-CCHA honoree, Jones earned first-team accolades in 2007-08. He captained the RedHawks to a school-record 33 victories during the 2007-08 campaign as Miami spent 10 weeks ranked No. 1. Jones finished the 2007-08 season with 31 goals, giving him 90 for his career and placing him second on the school’s all-time scoring list. His 31 goals ranked third nationally and was the first 30-goal season for a Miami player since 1992-93. Jones finished his collegiate career with 21 game-winning goals, tying him with two other players for the second-most game-winners in Division I history. Setting the program record for games played (161), Jones played in every game during his four-year Miami career and propelled the RedHawks to three NCAA Tournament appearances, a No. 1 regional seeding in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and a regular-season CCHA title in 2005-06. Additionally, Jones was named a National Strength and Conditioning All-American in 2008. He is currently signed with the National Hockey League’s Nashville Predators.
And Effinger:
(Belleville, Ill.), who boasted a 3.51 GPA and majored in American studies and political science, was a part of three NCAA Tournament appearances, a No. 1 regional seeding in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and a regular-season CCHA title in 2005-06. In 2007-08, the RedHawks spent 10 weeks ranked No. 1 in the country and compiled a school-record 33 wins. Effinger–who was considered the consummate team player–was a 2008 Spirit of Miami Award recipient, presented to the male and female senior student-athletes whose playing time did not deter their enthusiastic commitment to their team. In 2007-08, Effinger appeared in eight games and amassed a perfect 6-0 record and finished his career with an impressive mark of 32-12-4. As a sophomore, Effinger was named the CCHA’s Best Goaltender and was a second-team all-CCHA selection, ranking first in the league and second nationally in goals-against average and save percentage.
Congrats to both! Another example of how Miami University excels on the ice, in the classroom and in the community.
