>Future ‘Hawks Featured on NHL Watch List

>Future RedHawks Curtis McKenzie, Max Cook, Cody Murphy, Steve Spinell and Reilly Smith have been listed on the NHL Central Scouting “Watch List” for the 2009 NHL Draft.

McKenzie and Cook are “B-Rating” players while Murphy, Spinell, and Smith are “C-Rating” players.

Just what do these ratings mean you ask?

A Rating: A must see player who is predicted to be a potential First or Second Round Draft selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.

B Rating: A player to note if you are in the area, a potential selection in the
Third to Fifth Round Draft Selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.

C Rating: A player that Central Scouting is tracking, a potential late round
selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.

>Quick Update

>Quick update here just before I head off to bed.

Dan Boyle chipped in a goal as the San Jose Sharks denied the Philadelphia Flyers their first win of the season. San Jose won, in a shootout, 7-6.

Nice find by laxmom here, as the Newark Star-Ledger has a nice article about Andy Greene and his “perfect record” in the Devil’s lineup. (You’ll have to read the article, if you don’t know what the “prefect record” is.) Greene now has one goal and two assists so far this season.

Ryan Jones has updated his blog with the Nashville Predators. The blog is linked on the upper right side of this page. Jones is also featured in the video below, reading to some elementary school children. What a guy.

>Updated: Hartman Commits to Miami

>Joe Hartman
6’4, 200lbs
March 29, 1989
St. Cloud, Minnesota

According to the St. Cloud Times, Indiana Ice defenseman Joe Hartman has committed to Miami University. The blog post didn’t mention when Hartman would arrive at Miami. Through five games this season, he has one goal and three assists and is a + 3.

Apparently, several WCHA schools, including St. Cloud State in his hometown were interested in him. One would have to think that Jeff Blashill put in a good word for the RedHawks as well.

Joe currently plays with “RedHawk to Be” Max Cook in Indiana.

UPDATED: Here is an article from the St. Cloud Times from this morning that confirms Joe will be joining the Miami hockey program in 2009.

>Fun With eBay!

>Just stumbled something I had to post here. Someone on eBay has a listing for some old sports cards and who else did I find, but a very young Joe Cooper and Jeff Zatkoff.

NCAA recruiting “guru” Chris Heisenberg is reporting that Reilly Smith, currently playing for the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the OPJHL, has committed to Miami for the 2010-2011 season.

Smith is a forward and has scored 8 goals and added 17 assists, through 16 games.

>More Jones Coverage

>From The Tennessean:

Who could blame him? A year ago, he was in an entirely different situation — a fourth-year player at Miami of Ohio racking up all kinds of points en route to being named a finalist for the NCAA’s top award.

“In juniors and college, you’re ‘the guy.’ Then you get to the NHL and you find out there’s a lot of ‘the guys,’ ” Trotz said. “You’re used to being a big part of it and all of a sudden now, you’re playing 10 minutes a game instead of 25. “

Hornqvist, 20, finds himself in a similar position — one of the Swedish elite league’s top scorers the last two seasons, but now adjusting to a brand new team and a first season on North America’s smaller rinks.

“Everything is so straight-ahead and so fast,” Hornqvist said. “When you get the puck on the wall in your zone, you need to make a decision so fast. They’re a little slower (in Europe).”

Trotz figures the last thing his two rookies need is a coach screaming in their ears every time they make a mistake, so he tends to take the opposite approach as long as he sees the proper effort on the ice.

“They’re dealing with enough self-doubt,” Trotz said. “I still want the enthusiasm and the work ethic, and when they get the chance, I want them to go out and play relaxed because they’re good players. We want them to play instinctively, not be paralyzed by trying to over-think stuff.”

Hornqvist and Jones followed their instincts Wednesday, with Hornqvist stretching his stick to redirect a Shea Weber shot past Marty Turco and Jones whacking home a loose puck in the crease later in the game.

The goals weren’t enough to propel the Preds to victory, but they should serve as a nice confidence boost heading into Friday’s game in Columbus.

“It definitely helps because you’re not as nervous going in to the next game,” Jones said. “It’s good to know you can play at this level.”

>Guerin Placed on IR

>The Chatlotte Checkers of the ECHL have placed former RedHawk forward Marty Guerin on the 30-day IR. No details of Guerin’s injury were given.

More information as it becomes available.

>JONES SCORES!

>Ryan Jones scored his first NHL goal in a 6-4 loss against the Dallas Stars tonight. It was a backhander in front of the net…he was assisted by Rich Peverley and Ryan Suter and came at 13:50 of the second period to tie the game at three. He also added an assist on a Martin Erat goal in the third period, saw 8:25 (1:58 on the PP) worth of ice time and was a +2 on the evening.

Jones has also updated his blog prior to tonight’s game, which you can find linked on the top right side of my page.

It will be interesting to see his thoughts in his next post, about his first career goal and the good game he had in Dallas.

Congratulations, Ryan!
